PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Georgetown University field hockey team (1-17, 1-4 BIG EAST) fell behind quickly as Providence (7-9, 3-3 BIG EAST) scored three goals in the first 10 minutes of the match on the way to an 8-0 victory over the Hoyas on a rainy Saturday afternoon in Providence.
Georgetown freshman goalkeeper Clodagh Coghlan faced 16 shots, making nine saves in 58 minutes before Briana Pereira played the last 12 minutes in the Hoyas loss. The Friars got started quickly, as Julie Ruggieri scored a minute and 15 seconds into the match. Nellie Poulin would add a second goal at the 7:19 mark before Ruggieri scored two minutes later to put PC in front 3-0 before 10 minutes had elapsed.
Overall the Friars would score five first half goals, managing 15 shots to Georgetown's three, despite managing just one more penalty corner than the Hoyas. The Hoyas offense made Providence goalkeeper Rachel Chamberlain earn her shutout in the second half taking four shots on goal, including two from Charlotte Tierney. Chamberlain was able to keep ball out of the back of the cage, as her own offense added four more goals to go on to win, 8-0.
GU will conclude its season next weekend when they return to the Jacobs Complex, hosting BIG EAST foe Louisville on Saturday, October 31 before Senior Day on Sunday, November 1 against Radford. The Blue & Gray will honor the Hoyas lone senior Kristen Volpe.
