Final Stats
WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University field hockey team (1-18, 1-5 BIG EAST) fell to No. 15 Louisville on Saturday morning, 5-1 at the William I Jacobs Recreational Complex at American University. Katy Wingo (Great Falls, Va./Langley) scored the Hoyas lone goal and the first GU has managed against the Cardinals in four matches.
Freshman goalkeeper Briana Pereira (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) kept Georgetown close throughout against Louisville's potent offense, making 11 saves and coming out of the cage to break up several potential shots from the Cardinals throughout the match.
The Cardinals scored first at the 6:21 mark in the first half, as Julie Anne Smith deflected Nicole Youman's shot into the back of the cage on Louisville's third penalty corner of the game to take a 1-0 lead. The Hoyas were able to keep the deficit at one until the 23:08 mark, as the Cardinals would extend the lead to 2-0 when Nicole Youman drove down the right end line and tipped the ball into the side of the cage. With less than four minutes remaining in the first half Hayley Turner would get on the board with a shot that beat Pereira to the right side to take a 3-0 lead into the half.
The Hoyas had several near misses in the first half as a Louisville's Heather Bustanoby made a diving save to stop Charlotte Tierney's shot. Bustanoby finished the match with four saves. The Hoyas also failed to connect on a cross through the circle with less than 10 minutes in the first half.
GU came out strong in the second half, as Katy Wingo put Georgetown early in the second half when she chipped in a Kristen Volpe pass on a penalty corner to close the gap to two, at 3-1. The Hoyas continued its strong play, as Kimberly Keating led a Hoya breakaway down the left sideline before crossing the ball into the middle to Volpe to create a one-on-one situation with the keeper. Bustanoby came out to break up the play to keep GU down by two.
Turner would score again for Louisville collecting the rebound after her first hot and punching it into the back of the cage to take a 4-1 lead. Youman would score another for UL on a breakaway, where she went right around a sliding Pereira to give the Cardinals a 5-1 lead, the eventual final score.
Georgetown will play its season finale on Sunday at 11 a.m. when they host the Radford Highlanders at the William I Jacobs Recreational Complex. Sunday will also be Senior Day, as the Hoyas recognize senior captain Kristen Volpe, the squad's lone senior, prior to the game.
