WASHINGTON - Georgetown University Head Men's Lacrosse Coach Dave Urick announced today that seniors Craig Dowd (East Northport, N.Y./Northport), Barney Ehrmann (Baltimore, Md./Gilman) and Scott Kocis (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) have been named captains for the 2009-10 academic year.
Georgetown will play in a fall scrimmage this weekend hosted at the United States Naval Academy. The Hoyas will face off against Hobart on Saturday, Oct. 10 at noon before playing Penn State at 2 p.m.
Dowd led the Hoyas in scoring with 32 points, scoring 10 goals and handing out 22 assists in 14 games. He led the team in assists, the second-straight year he recorded at least 20. Dowd's 1.57 per-game assist average ranked second in the ECAC and was No. 17 nationally. In 41 career games, he has scored 41 goals and has 53 assists for 94 points. Dowd's 53 assists are 11th all-time at Georgetown, while his 94 career points rank 20th all-time.
Kocis, who missed nearly all of the 2008 season with an injury, returned to the lineup last year and earned All-ECAC First Team honors. He finished tied for second on the team in scoring with 29 points, was third on the team with 21 goals scored and second on the team with eight assists.
During the latter part of the season, Kocis shined for the Hoyas, tallying eight goals and three assists in the final three games. He was named the ECAC Offensive Player of the Week on April 20 after scoring three goals and adding one assist in Georgetown's 13-10 win over then No. 12-ranked UMass. He scored three goals in a 15-7 win over Rutgers on April 25 and was named to the league's Honor Roll the following week.
Kocis, who was selected as a preseason nominee for the Tewaaraton Trophy recognizing the top player in Division I, has scored 28 goals and has nine assists for 37 points in 31 career games.
Ehrmann, one of the top defenseman in the country, earned All-ECAC kudos for the third time in his career last year. A second team selection in 2009, the 6-6, 220-pound defenseman led the team with 61 ground balls and was ranked 30th in the country in that category, averaging 4.36 per game. Ehrmann, who earned first team honors as a sophomore in 2008 and was a second team selection in 2007, has 159 career ground balls, which ranks 14th all-time at Georgetown.
The Hoyas, who finished 7-7 last year, open the 2010 season on Saturday, Feb. 27, hosting local rival Maryland at the Multi-Sport Field at 2 p.m. Georgetown will play St. John's on Saturday, March 6 at 1 p.m., the team's first-ever game in the newly-formed BIG EAST Conference. Joining the Hoyas in the BIG EAST are Notre Dame, Providence, Rutgers, St. John's, Syracuse and Villanova.
