WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's basketball team (1-0) opens its home schedule at the Verizon Center on Tuesday, Nov. 17 when Temple heads to town, with a slated tip off for 4 p.m. (ET). The game will be shown on ESPN with Mike Patrick providing the play-by-play and Len Elmore adding the color commentary. The game can also be heard locally on ESPN 980 AM. Georgetown opened its season last Friday in New Orleans, La., with a 74-58 victory over Tulane. Sophomore center Greg Monroe (New Orleans, La./Helen Cox) recorded his fifth career double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds, leading four players in double figures.
The game was the fifth consecutive time the Hoyas have opened its season with a victory. Georgetown's last season-opening loss came in its last meeting with Tuesday's opponent, Temple. The Owls defeated the Hoyas 75-57 to begin the 2004-05 season, the first season John Thompson III spent on the Hilltop. GU trails the all-time series with the Owls, 21-13, with Temple winning the last three matchups.
In Friday's victory, junior guard Austin Freeman (Mitchellville, Md./DeMatha) scored 16 points, contributing six rebounds and five assists, and sophomore guard Jason Clark (Arlington, Va./Bishop O'Connell) added a career-high 13 points with five assists and four rebounds. Junior guard Chris Wright (Bowie, Md./St. John's College HS) added 11 points in the victory.
The Hoyas shot 52.8 percent from the floor (28-for-53), 41.2 percent from three-point range (7-for-17) and 61.1 percent from the free-throw line (11-for-18) against Tulane. They outrebounded the Green Wave 36-25 and had 17 assists on 28 made field goals.
Temple (1-0) opened its season on Saturday with a 76-56 win over Delaware. The Owls are coming off a 2008-09 season in which they finished 22-11 overall and 11-5 in the Atlantic 10. Temple was selected to finish in a tie for fifth place in the league when the preseason rankings were announced by the A-10. Junior Forward Lavoy Allen and senior guard Ryan Brooks lead a team that has to replace three starters, including honorable mention All-America guard Dionte Christmas.
In the opener, Brooks scored a game-high 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds, while Allen scored nine points and grabbed a game-high 15 boards. Juan Fernandez chipped in 13 points in the victory.
Temple shot 50 percent from the floor (25-for-50), 26.7 percent from three-point range (4-for-15) and 81.5 percent from the free-throw line (22-for-27).
Following Tuesday's game the Hoyas will head back on the road to meet with Savannah State on Saturday, November 21 at 1 p.m. GU then returns home for three games at the Verizon Center against Lafayette, Mount Saint Mary's and American.
