WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball squad will host the Jacksonville State University Gamecocks on Sunday at McDonough Arena. The Hoyas are currently on an eight-game win streak, their longest since the 1992-93 season, and have had a weeks rest while taking final exams. Georgetown will host two games in three days welcoming the NC State Lady Wolfpack on Tuesday.
The Blue & Gray is 9-2 on the season following a number of strong performances to open the season. The Hoyas are currently receiving votes in both the AP and USA Today/ESPN polls. Georgetown is also leading the nation in turnover margin averaging a +10.55 on the season and in steals per game with an average of 15.5 to its credit. GU is tied for ninth in the nation on its eight-game win streak.
The Hoyas are led by freshman Ta'Shauna "Sugar" Rodgers (Suffolk, Va./King's Fork) who is averaging 18.5 ppg and ranks second on the squad in assists with 28. Senior Jaleesa Butler (St. Louis, Mo./Alton) is averaging 11.9 ppg and a team-best 7.6 rpg. Junior Monica McNutt (Suitland, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) rounds out those averaging in double digits, with 10.5 ppg and shooting 81.5 percent at the line. McNutt was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll on Monday after leading the Hoyas past Richmond with a career-best 24 points. Butler also had her second double-double of the season in that victory.
Jacksonville State is currently 1-8 overall, but will face one more opponent at the Hampton Inn and Suites Lady Osprey Holiday Classic hosted by the University of North Florida before heading to Washington, D.C. The Gamecocks lost to Savannah State on Thursday and will take on South Carolina State on Friday to close out the tournament. JSU is led by Zenobia Pitts who is averaging 9.1 ppg.
Georgetown is 1-0 all-time against the Gamecocks. Last year, GU opened the season with a 74-63 victory over JSU in Jacksonville, Ala. Krystle Hatton led the way for the Hoyas with 12 points and eight rebounds.
