Washington, D.C. - Georgetown's Erick Fernandez (Hialeah, Fla./Hialeah) was named Preseason All-BIG EAST by the conference's coaches this afternoon. Last season, the junior designated hitter/catcher was the first GU baseball player to be elected to a first or second All-BIG EAST team since Ryan Craft and Billy Quinn were chosen in 2005.
Fernandez had a 24-game hitting streak in 2009 and led the Hoyas in numerous offensive categories including batting average (.349), slugging percentage (.544), on-base percentage (.426), hits (59), doubles (16) and multi-hit games (18). He also finished second on the team in RBI's, walks, total bases and multi-RBI games.
Last year, Georgetown achieved their best record in BIG EAST play since 2007and earned series victories over St. John's and Villanova. They were selected to finish 12th in the conference this season in the same preseason polls.
