Washington, D.C. - A big first half deficit was too much to overcome for the Georgetown University women's lacrosse squad Saturday afternoon at Multi-Sport Field. The No. 7 Hoyas fell to the No. 1 Northwestern University Wildcats (6-0), 15-4, for GU's first loss of the season. Georgetown now drops to 3-1 on the season with two tough games in the coming week. Despite the loss, there was a silver lining as the squad donated half of the proceeds at the gate to the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation, an organization that both GU and NU belong to.
The first half belonged to Northwestern as the Wildcats jumped out to a 9-0 lead with multiple goals from Hilary Bowen and Danielle Spencer.
Georgetown struggled with possession with just a pair of draw controls and four shots on goal in the half.
At 14:18, GU finally got on the board when Ashby Kaestner (Trappe, Md./Saints Peter and Paul) did a spin move in the crease and fired it past the keeper making the score 9-1.
Georgetown had some chances with shots on goal from Molly Ford (Reisterstown, Md./Notre Dame Prep), Jacqueline Giles (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) and Kelly Barnes (St. Davids, Pa./Radnor) as well as a shot through traffic that hit the post by Allie Hubschmann (Short Hills, N.J./Oak Knoll). Unfortunately, the chances didn't produce scores as GU trailed 11-1 at the half.
The Wildcats opened the second with a goal less than two minutes in and added three more as the time ticked away.
However, the Hoyas had some fight left in them as Jordy Kirr (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr School) took it down the right sideline and scored to make it 15-2 with five minutes remaining. Logan McCraw (Malvern, Pa./Conestoga) was then awarded the ball after a foul in the restraining box with a wide open field in front of her. The Northwestern keeper was caught out of the net and McCraw shot from well outside the circle to add one more to the total.
Rounding out the scoring, Hubschmann connected on her second shot on goal off of an assists from Barnes with 15 seconds remaining to make the final 15-4.
Georgetown was out-shot 32-13and had 10 ground balls to Northwestern's 16. The Hoyas maintained possession in the second half with a 6-2 advantage on draw controls finishing the game with eight while the Wildcats had 12 on the afternoon. Caitlin Formby (Towson, Md./Notre Dame Prep) took the loss in goal with nine saves for the game. Bowen led the Wildcats with five goals.
Jaclyn Murphy, the founder of Friends of Jaclyn and Northwestern honorary teammate, was in attendance as well as GU's own Allie Mendofik. Both squads, honorary teammates and many others will attend a banquet this evening to raise money for the organization that funds research for pediatric brain tumor patients.
The Hoyas will have a few days off before facing No. 3 Maryland at Multi-Sport Field on Wednesday at 3:45 p.m.
