Washington, D.C. - A late-inning rally by the Georgetown University baseball team fell short on Tuesday night against UMBC at Shirley Povich Field, 9-7. The Hoyas cut a six-run deficit to two and had runners on second and third in the ninth, but could not score the equalizer.
Trailing 9-3 with three outs left, Georgetown started a comeback against the Retrievers. Kelly Muir was hit by a pitch but quickly became the first out when Tommy Lee hit into a fielder's choice. With one on and one out, Andy Lentz doubled down the right-field line to make it 9-4.
Erick Fernandez stepped to the plate as a pinch-hitter and promptly made an impact with a two-run bomb to left. Not to be outdone, Sean Baumann made it back-to-back dingers with a solo shot. The home runs were the fifth of the season for both Fernandez and Baumann, tying them for third on the team.
The inning was not over yet as GU had managed to chip away at the lead and cut it to 9-7. Sean Lamont singled up the middle and Dan Capeless walked after a UMBC pitching change. After a ground-out, Chip Malt singled to center to load the bases full of Hoyas. However, Steve Miller was able to earn the final out for his second save of the season and only the sixth win of the season for UMBC.
Dan Godefroi, who started his first game for GU this season on the mound, was saddled with the loss. The sophomore only allowed two earned runs over five innings but a costly error hurt the left-hander.
The Hoyas grabbed the first lead of the game very early. Lentz and Baumann delivered consecutive singles to right-center and with two outs, Lamont knifed a base-hit through the left-side for a 1-0 advantage.
UMBC scored two runs in the fourth and fifth innings for a 4-1 lead before GU grabbed a run back in the bottom of the fifth. Lee doubled down the right-field line and advanced to third on a deep fly to right off the bat of Lentz. With two down, Baumann hit a hard shot to short that hit the UMBC fielder square in the mitt. However, he dropped the ball and Lee scampered home with his 25th run of the season.
UMBC grabbed the run back for a 5-2 lead but Georgetown kept the pressure on by scoring a run for the second inning in a row. Tom Elliott hit his sixth home run of the season, a solo shot to dead-center field. Elliott is now second on the team in dingers and has collected 15 extra base-hits this season.
The Hoyas hope for better weather tomorrow as tonight's contest was pushed back an hour due to inclement weather. The Hoyas travel to Charlottesville, Va., on Wednesday for a 6:30 p.m. contest with the No. 14 Virginia Cavaliers.
