Box Score
Harrisonburg, Va. - Harrisonburg, Va. - Mackensey Carter (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) homered and pitched 5.0 innings allowing just two runs to earn her third win, as the Georgetown University softball team (14-26, 6-11 BIG EAST) defeated James Madison (26-14) 4-2 on Wednesday afternoon at the JMU Softball Complex.
Carter allowed two runs on four hits over 5.0 innings to lead the Hoyas, who have won 7-of-their-last-10 games, past the Dukes for the first time in team history. Georgetown had lost its three previous games against JMU.
Carter got the Hoyas on the board first in the top of the second inning when she deposited Heather Widner's first pitch over the left field wall to take a 1-0 advantage.
They built on their one run lead in the top of the sixth inning, as Hanson led off with a single up the middle. Demetria Cipriano (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs Charter) moved Hanson to second base on the well executed sacrifice bunt, before Kristi Preuss (LaPlata, Md./LaPlata) drew the one-out walk. Samantha Peters (Suwanee, Ga./Collins Hill) followed with a double down the right field line to score Hanson. A fielding error allowed Carter to reach base and also brought in two more Hoya runners, giving GU a 4-0 lead.
Courtney Simons would drive in two runs with a triple to left centerfield cutting the Hoyas lead in half in the bottom of the sixth inning. Jennifer Connell (Roswell, Ga./Roswell) would come on to end the Dukes rally in the sixth inning before striking out two in a scoreless seventh inning to earn the save.
The Hoyas return to BIG EAST Conference action on Saturday when they travel to Louisville, Ky. to face the No. 17 Louisville Cardinals (40-6, 15-3 BIG EAST) for two games beginning at 3 p.m.
