Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University baseball team was swept by BIG EAST leaders West Virginia on Sunday afternoon in Morgantown, W. Va., 8-3. Sean Lamont (Houston, Texas/Bellaire), who entered the weekend ranked second in home runs and eighth in RBI's among conference players, hit a three-run homer for the Hoyas.
WVU took an early lead off GU starter Tim Adleman (Raleigh, N.C./Wakefield) behind a second-inning grand slam from right fielder Grant Buckner. Buckner finished the day with two home runs in three at-bats at was responsible for five of WVU's eight runs.
Adleman took the loss after allowing seven earned runs in six innings. Jack Bender (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) entered in relief and threw two shutout innings for the Hoyas. On the WVU side, starter Billy Gross struck out 12 batters over 7 2/3 innings for the win. The Hoya bats were relatively silent for eight innings, mustering only three hits until a three-run ninth.
Dan Godefroi (Andover, Mass./Andover) doubled with one out in the ninth and Sean Baumann (Tampa, Fla./Freedom) was able to leg out an infield single before Lamont smashed his 10th home run of the season.
The Hoyas return home this week for a three-game series with USF.
