WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Georgetown University softball team (15-30, 6-14 BIG EAST) was not able to rally from seven runs down when game two of a March 28 doubleheader with Notre Dame was resumed on Friday at Guy Mason Field, falling to Notre Dame (37-14, 18-3 BIG EAST), 8-2.
When the game was halted, Notre Dame held an 8-1 lead with one out in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Hoyas managed to put one more run on the board behind a solo home run from McKinley Cooper (McLean, Va./Langley) in the bottom of the seventh inning. Mackensey Carter (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) took the loss, allowing five runs, three earned over 3.1 innings.
On March 28, Katie Fleury led-off hitting Mackensey Carter's full-count offering over the left centerfield wall to give Notre Dame an early 1-0 lead. They would add four more runs in the top of the fourth inning highlighted by a Linda Kohan home run, extending ND's lead to 5-0.
Samantha Peters (Suwanee, Ga./Collins Hill) hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning to get the Hoyas on the board and break up Jody Valdivia's no-hitter, bringing the score to 6-1.
Notre Dame would add two more insurance runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a decisive 8-1 lead, into the bottom half of the fifth inning.
Olivia Newhouse (Weston, Conn./Green Farms Academy) would reach base on an error and Suria Bahadue (Miami, Fla./Monsignor Edward Pace) drew a walk to give the Hoyas their first baserunners since the first inning. Kelsie Hanson made her way to the batters box with one out, but the game would be halted. When the game resumed, Valdivia would retire Hanson and Demetria Cipriano (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs Charter) in order to end the threat.
Valdivia earned the victory, allowing two runs, both home runs, in 7.0 complete innings, while striking out 11.
Georgetown remains home to close out their 2009 schedule. On Saturday the Hoyas host St. John's in a BIG EAST doubleheader beginning at noon. The Red Storm defeated Georgeotwn, 7-0 when the two teams met at the FIU Tournament in February. Sunday the Hoyas will honor Christina Gallinari and Kat Incantalupo during pre-game Senior Day Festivities before playing two against DePaul beginning at 11 a.m.
