Georgetown to Open NCAA Tournament with Princeton on Sunday

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University women's lacrosse squad will play eighth-seeded Princeton on Sunday afternoon in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament. The game is scheduled for 1 p.m., at Class of 1952 Stadium in Princeton, N.J. The Hoyas are currently ranked eighth in the country and received an at-large bid into the 16-team tournament.

2009 marks the Hoyas' 11th appearance in the NCAA Tournament and the fourth under Head Coach Ricky Fried. Georgetown has advanced out of the first round eight times and made two appearances in the national championship game, in 2001 and 2002.

The Hoyas finished the season with a record of 13-5 and a mark of 6-1 in the BIG EAST. GU advanced to the conference tournament final, but fell to Notre Dame, 12-10. Georgetown has played six teams in the NCAA Tournament field and defeated three of them including fifth-seeded Duke, sixth-seeded Notre Dame and seventh-seeded Syracuse.

GU is 6-8 all-time against Princeton, the teams' last meeting was a 9-8 Georgetown victory in 2008 to close out the regular season. The squads have met twice before in the NCAA Tournament, both times the Tigers prevailed. In 1998 GU fell, 12-11, in overtime in the opening round and in 2002 Princeton downed Georgetown in the championship game by a score of 12-7.

The Tigers are 13-3 on the season with losses to three NCAA Tournament squads; Duke, Penn and Maryland. Princeton is led by Ivy League Player of the Year Holly McGarvie who has 32 goals and 19 assists on the season for 51 points.

The NCAA Selection Committee hands out eight at-large bids paired with the eight squads that receive an automatic bid by winning their respective conference to make up the sixteen-team field. The top eight teams are seeded.

The opening draw is scheduled 1:30 p.m. Live stats and an audio feed will be available at the Princeton athletic website. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for children and senior citizens. Limited parking is available in Lot 20, overflow parking will be provided in Lot 23.

The winner will advance to play the winner of No. 1 Northwestern against UMass.
