WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University field hockey team (6-5, 1-1 BIG EAST) defeated the Rutgers University Scarlet Knights (3-8, 1-2 BIG EAST),4-3, in overtime at William I. Jacobs Recreational Complex Friday afternoon. Sophomore Catherine Shugrue (Devon, Pa./Episcopal Academy) scored three goals, including the game winner in overtime, to lead the Hoyas and sophomore Sophia Pifer (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) added a penalty stroke for the Blue & Gray.
Sophomore goalkeeper Briana Pereira (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) posted six saves in the victory.
The Hoyas got on the board early when Shugrue scored the first of her three goals when she dribbled down the left side and hit it into the right corner of the cage for the unassisted goal.
Within five minutes, Rutgers tallied its first goal when Nicole Gentile tipped the ball in front of the cage off of a penalty corner assisted by MacKenzie Noda and Christie Morad.
Two minutes later, Gia Nappi hit the back of the cage for the Scarlet Knights with the assist coming from Jenna Bull converting on the second penalty corner of the afternoon for the 2-1 Rutgers advantage.
Georgetown tied it up at 29:01 when Shugrue converted off the penalty corner on the left-hand side with assists coming from Pifer and Kimberly Keating (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Southern Lehigh).
Rutgers regained the lead at 43:09 when Lisa Patrone tallied an unassisted goal at 43:09 after the Scarlet Knights failed to convert on the initial penalty corner.
After being fouled inside the circle, Pifer converted on the penalty stroke at 51:45 to knot it up at three.
The Hoya defense stymied five-consecutive penalty corners giving the Blue & Gray momentum in the closing minutes of regulation. Rutgers was assessed a crucial yellow card at 67:02 that continued the momentum with the score tied at three, sending the game into overtime.
Shugrue hit her third and game-winning goal at 73:49 off a keeper save making the final, 4-3. She is the first Hoya to have 10 goals in a season since Kristen Volpe accomplished this feat in 2009. Shugrue now has 11 on the season .
Georgetown will conclude the weekend's games on Sunday Oct. 3 when it takes on Richmond at noon at the William I. Jacobs Recreational on the campus of American University. Live stats will be available on www.guhoyas.com
