Georgetown Field Hockey to Take on Villanova and Lafayette

Oct. 21, 2010

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University field hockey team (6-10, 1-3 BIG EAST) will take on BIG EAST opponent Villanova (5-9, 1-3 BIG EAST) on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Villanova Stadium in Villanova, Pa. and Lafayette (6-8) on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Metzgar Field in Easton, Pa.

Georgetown went 0-2 in last weekend's action with a loss against No.8 Syracuse last Saturday and a 3-2 decision to Towson last Sunday. Sophomore midfielder Claire Mittermiller (La Jolla, Calif./La Jolla) and sophomore forward Catherine Shugrue (Devon, Pa./Episcopal Academy) provided the offense for the Hoyas against Towson.

Shugrue leads the Hoyas offensively as she is second in the BIG EAST in points per game (2.14) and a national rank of 19th. She is second in goals per game (0.93), good for 17th in the NCAA. She also has the second highest goal total in the past decade only behind Elena Elster's 23 goals in 2000.

Annie Wilson (Darien, Conn./Darien) leads the Blue & Gray with eight assists, putting her in a tie for fifth in the conference averaging 0.50 per game. Sophia Pifer (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) and Annika Bannon (Hopkinton, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) are tied for sixth in the conference with 0.44 assists per game. Bannon has started in 70 consecutive starts going into this weekend's action.

Ai Nishino (Rye, N.Y./Holy Child) and Pifer are tied for second in the conference with two defensive saves apiece. The team has five defensive saves, second behind Villanova.

The Hoyas and the Wildcats are both 1-3 in the BIG EAST as they play for the fourth spot to qualify for the conference to be held on Nov. 6-7 at the George J. Sherman Family-Sports Complex in Storrs, Conn.

VILLANOVA: The Wildcats are led by Abby Sordoni and Dana Ramsden with 15 points apiece. Villanova has played four nationally-ranked opponents in No. 1 North Carolina, No. 2 Maryland, No. 6 Connecticut and No. 10 Louisville. The Wildcats were 0-4 in these games. The Hoyas and Wildcats have each played UConn, Rutgers and La Salle. Georgetown is 2-1 against those opponents whereas Villanova is 1-2. Villanova defeated Providence 4-0, earlier this month.

LAFAYETTE: The Leopards are led by Deanna DiCrocce with 26 points. Megan Cicci leads the team with nine goals. Lafayette has played three games against nationally ranked opponents (No.15 Penn State, No.3 Virginia and No. 16 Drexel). Lafayette is 0-3 against these opponents. Georgetown and Lafayette both were taken to overtime by Rutgers with the Hoyas defeating the Scarlet Knights, 4-3, and the Leopards fell with a score of 2-1. The Leopards are undefeated in the Patriot League with a record of 3-0 and have two remaining conference games, against Lehigh and No. 7 American.
