WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University field hockey team (6-12, 1-4 BIG EAST) will take on BIG EAST opponent Providence (4-13, 0-5 BIG EAST) on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at the William I. Jacobs Recreational Complex in the Hoyas season finale. Senior defender and two-year captain Annika Bannon (Hopkinton, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) will be honored at Senior Day. She has started in 72-consecutive games since arriving on the Hilltop, amassing 16 points and five defensive saves. Bannon is tied for sixth in the conference with 0.39 assists per game.
Georgetown went 0-2 in last weekend's action with a 6-0 loss at Villanova on Friday and a 6-3 decision at Lafayette on Sunday. Against the Leopards, sophomore midfielder Caitlin Hickey (Milton, Mass./Milton Academy) scored two goals and sophomore forward Charlotte Tierney (Rye, N.Y./Holy Child) added another, her ninth of the season, for GU.
Catherine Shugrue (Devon, Pa./Episcopal Academy) leads the Hoyas offensively and is second in the BIG EAST in points (30), points per game (1.88), goals (13) and goals per game (0.93). Shugrue is tied for 23rd in goals per game and 30th in points per game among NCAA Division I competitors. She is tied for third in the conference with four game-winning goals. She also has the second-highest goal total in the past decade only behind Elena Elster's 23 goals in 2000.
Annie Wilson (Darien, Conn./Darien) leads the Blue & Gray with eight assists, placing her fifth in the conference averaging 0.44 per game. Sophia Pifer (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) and Bannon are tied for sixth in the conference with 0.39 assists per game.
Ai Nishino (Rye, N.Y./Rye) is third in the conference with three defensive saves. Pifer is tied for fourth in the conference with two defensive saves. The team has six defensive saves, third behind Villanova and Rutgers in the conference.
PROVIDENCE: The Friars are led by Julie Rugieri and Ashlyn Hudson, scoring three goals and eight points. Ashley Mulkey leads the Friars with two defensive saves and is tied for fourth in the conference. The Hoyas and Friars have five common opponents including Connecticut, Louisville, Rutgers, Syracuse and Villanova. Georgetown is 1-4, while Providence is 0-5 in those games. Providence has won the last four matches against Georgetown since joining the BIG EAST Conference in 2006 and leads the series 9-1 overall.
