WASHINGTON (AP) - The No. 20/19 Georgetown University women's basketball squad used a big second-half to down the Missouri State University Lady Bears (8-3), 72-59, Sunday afternoon at McDonough Arena. Sophomore shooting guard Sugar Rodgers (Suffolk, Va./King's Fork) scored 18 second-half points to lead the Hoyas, while three players scored in double figures for Georgetown. The Blue & Gray improved to 9-3 on the season.
"We ran the floor better today and we rebounded, but there are still things we need to improve upon. Seventeen turnovers in way too many," said Georgetown Head Coach Terri Williams-Flournoy.
Missouri State tied it up early in the second half, but Georgetown quickly regained the lead. A 7-0 run midway through the second half put the Hoyas up by 11 which the squad managed to maintain through much of the half.
The Blue & Gray went ahead by as much as 20 points late in the second half but allowed a run in the closing minutes to get the 72-59 victory.
Georgetown started off strong jumping out to a quick 12-point advantage. The Lady Bears managed to cut it to three at 3:16 in the first half, but the Hoyas came back to make it 27-22 at the half.
Rodgers led all scorers with 20 points, scoring 18 in the second half after picking up two fouls early in the first. Senior guard Monica McNutt (Suitland, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) added 14, while junior Rubylee Wright (Latta, S.C./Latta) contributed 13 points and five rebounds. Junior Tia Magee (Tulsa, Okla./Jenks) posted a squad-best eight rebounds.
Georgetown outrebounded the Lady Bears, 48-30, and shot 39.7 percent from the field.
