WASHINGTON - The No. 20/19 Georgetown University women's basketball team closed out final exams with a victory over the Coppin State University Eagles (2-7) Wednesday afternoon at McDonough Arena. The Hoyas coasted to the 73-52 victory to improve to 10-3 on the season and continue their 21-game home win streak. Sophomore Sugar Rodgers (Suffolk, Va./King's Fork) led the way with her first double-double of the season posting 22 points and 10 rebounds.
"There are a lot of good things to take away from today, we outrebounded a team for the second game in a row and at times we played well," said Head Coach Terri Williams-Flournoy. "However, we were very sloppy with the ball. Coppin State forced us into 26 turnovers and that's too many."
Sitting on a 20-point lead, Georgetown maintained its intensity for the entire 40 minutes resulting in a big win. The Blue & Gray led by as much as 30 points in the second half which was the second-largest lead of the season for the squad. Coppin State attempted a late comeback, but the Georgetown offense continued to click to get the 73-52 victory.
The Hoyas never trailed in the game taking a quick lead and managing to maintain for much of the first half. The Eagles cut it to eight at 9:46 in the first, but Georgetown went on a 15-0 run watching the lead swell to as much as 23, 37-14, as the half ran down. A number of players contributed during the run including four points from junior Adria Crawford (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison).
"During that run, we didn't turn the ball over and that made the difference," said Williams-Flournoy. "When we take care of the ball everything else falls into place."
The Hoyas went up by as much as 26 in the first, and went into the break leading 44-20.
Rodgers led all players with 22 points and ten rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Tommacina McBride (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) added 11 and three Hoyas tallied eight points as nine of the ten players to see the court scored.
The Blue & Gray outrebounded Coppin State, 41-33, and forced 27 turnovers on 16 steals. The Hoyas shot 46.8 percent from the field and allowed 35.2 percent shooting from the Eagles.
Larissa Carter led CSU with 13 points and nine rebounds.
