Final Stats
FRESNO, Calif - The Georgetown University softball team (6-9) was not able to bring the game-tying run across the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning, as East Tennessee State University (9-11) held on for a 5-4 victory on Friday night at the Bayer Cropscience Classic at Bulldog Diamond on the campus of Fresno State University.
Samantha Peters (Suwanee, Ga./Collins Hill) drove in two runs and Shikara Lowe (Beaverton, Ore./Jesuit) went 2-for-3 in the loss.
The Hoyas would fall behind early, as ETSU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning, but Georgetown would score three runs on three hits in the bottom half of the frame to vault in front. Shikara Lowe (Beaverton, Ore./Jesuit) led off with a double to right centerfield and Cara Savarese (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) drew a one-out walk, as McKinley Cooper (McLean, Va./Langley) doubled to drive in Lowe and move Savarese to third. Peters followed with a single to centerfield to drive in two runs, giving the Hoyas a 3-1 lead.
ETSU would chip away at GU's lead, scoring once in the top of the third inning, before tying the game at three in the top of the fourth inning. The Hoyas would strand two runners, including one in scoring position in the third and fourth.
The Buccaneers regained the lead in the top of the sixth inning, scoring their first run on an illegal pitch, before another came around to score on a Hoya error.
The Hoyas would gain a run back in the bottom of the inning. Lowe singled and Callie Eward was brought on to pinch run. Demetria Cipriano followed with a single, giving the Hoyas two baserunners. The two would execute a double steal and Eward would come around to score on a wild pitch, but it would be the last run the Blue and Gray managed.
Jennifer Connell (Roswell, Ga./Roswell) took the loss, allowing five runs, three earned, on eight hits over 7.0 innings.
