COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 7 Georgetown University women's looked solid in the first half, but couldn't hold on to eventually fall 20-11 to the No. 2 University of Maryland Terrapins (6-0) Wednesday evening in College Park, Md. The Hoyas started strong but allowed two big Maryland runs. GU is now 2-3 on the season.
Molly Ford (Reisterstown, Md./Notre Dame Prep) hit an unassisted shot two minutes in to start the scoring for the Hoyas and Sarah Seats (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School) added another minutes later. Jordy Kirr (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr School) then connected on the free position at 23:49 as the Hoyas took a 3-0 lead.
The Terps answered, but Ford made it two for the game with a bouncing shot into the back of the cage. As Maryland came back, Kirr hit on the right side with a similar shot. After a number of scoreless minutes, the Terps put together a 4-0 run of their own to take the first lead of the game.
Georgetown stopped the bleeding as Kirr hit Ford in the middle to come within one. A late card allowed the Terps to connect on a free position and they added one more before the break to make it 9-6 at half.
The Hoyas were outshot 20-9 in the first but had one more ground ball (7-6). Maryland also held an 11-5 advantage on draw controls. Caitlin Formby (Towson, Md./Notre Dame Prep) had four big stops in goal while Brittany Dipper managed two.
The Terrapins struck first in the second, inflating the lead to as much as eight with a 5-0 run. At 19:56, Georgetown finally got some offense going after a tough three minutes playing a man down. Ashby Kaestner (Trappe, Md./Saints Peter and Paul) scored the free position to cut the lead in half, but GU had its work cut out for it.
"I told the team at halftime to be ready for the first ten minutes," said Head Coach Ricky Fried. "They (Maryland) imposed their will and played their game and we were reactive."
Looking at a nine-point deficit, Ford scored her fourth and fifth of the evening and Bunny O'Reilly (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside School) hit a high shot on the left side. Kathleen Dwyer (Winnetka, Ill./Loyola Academy) rounded out the scoring for the Hoyas but it wouldn't be enough as Georgetown fell 20-11.
GU was outshot 38-21 and had 13 fewer draw controls which proved to be a key factor. The Hoyas managed 15 ground balls to Maryland's nine and but had 13 turnovers. Formby took the loss with 10 saves in the game.
Georgetown will return home on Saturday to take on No. 4/5 North Carolina at Multi-Sport Field. The opening draw is scheduled for 1 p.m. Live stats and a webcast will be available, the game will also be broadcast on Verizon FiOS.
