Final Stats
BALTIMORE, Md. - The Georgetown University softball team (7-14) would score a run in the bottom of the ninth inning, but it was one run too short, as the Hoyas fell to the St. Joseph's Hawks, 3-2 in nine innings to conclude their play at the UMBC Spring Classic.
It was the eighth one-run loss the Hoyas have suffered this season and the 11th game they have played decided by one run. Following the game, Demetria Cipriano and Shikara Lowe were named to the UMBC Spring Classic All Tournament team.
The Hoyas and Hawks played scoreless ball through the first three innings, until Taylor Korpita hit a solo home run in the top of the fourth inning to give St. Joe's a 1-0 lead.
Demetria Cipriano (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs Charter) got the Hoyas started in the bottom of the fifth inning with a one-out double. Kelly Cianciotta (Summit, N.J./Scotch Plains Fanwood) came on to pinch run and came around to score on Cara Savarese's (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) single to left field to tie the score at one run apiece.
The score remained tied over the next three innings until the Hawks broke through in the ninth inning with two runs to take a 3-1 lead. A sacrifice fly from Cipriano would drive in Kristi Preuss (LaPlata, Md./LaPlata) in the bottom of the ninth, but it would be the only run they would manage, falling to St. Joe's 3-2 in two exta innings.
Mackensey Carter (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) took the loss in her second strong performance of the weekend, allowing three runs, two earned on five hits, while striking out seven in 9.0 innings. Taryn Ashway earned the victory, tossing 3.0 innings and allowing one run, none earned, on one hit.
The Hoyas open its home season at Guy Mason Field on Thursday, March 25 when they host Rhode Island for the first time in program history at 5 p.m.
