WASHINGTON - The No. 9 Georgetown University women's lacrosse squad certainly had its chances. Unfortunately, the Hoyas just couldn't find the back of the cage through four overtimes as the Blue & Gray fell to the No. 19 Princeton University Tigers (4-4) 15-14 Sunday afternoon at Multi-Sport Field. GU outshot the Tigers 8-2 through four extra periods but eventually fell to drop to 3-5 on the season.
"We did everything we wanted to do on offense during overtime," said Head Coach Ricky Fried. "We ran the plays we wanted and got the shots we wanted but we just couldn't finish."
Early on, it looked as though Georgetown would run away with it opening the game with a 3-0 run. Princeton responded tying it at three at 20:44 and then taking the lead following another run to go ahead 6-4. Junior Kathleen Dwyer (Winnetka, Ill./Loyola Academy) sparked some Hoya scoring that including tallies from sophomore Erin Lovett (Wantagh, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) and senior Ashby Kaestner (Trappe, Md./Saints Peter and Paul).
GU finished out the first with a goal from junior Mary Beth Brophy (Berwyn, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) to make it 8-7 at the break.
The squads traded goals for much of the second with Georgetown never moving ahead by more than two. With 3:27 remaining, senior Sarah Seats (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School) notched a goal to put Georgetown up 14-13. Unfortunately, Princeton came right back on the other end to tie it up and send the game into overtime.
Georgetown dominated off the draw in overtime winning three of four. The Hoyas stalled to get one good shot throughout each three-minute period. GU's tactic worked and the Blue & Gray had a number of solid opportunities to end the game but Princeton keeper Erin Tochihara came up with four big saves and a number of other looks went wide.
With 2:04 left in the fourth overtime, the Tigers regained possession and streaked down the field through the Hoya defense going straight to goal. Despite GU's best efforts, Lizzy Drumm could not be stopped as she found the back of the cage making the final 15-14.
Kaestner led the Hoyas with four goals and Molly Ford (Reisterstown, Md./Notre Dame Prep) added two as GU's only multiple-goal scorers. The Blue & Gray forced Princeton into 17 turnovers but was stopped on draw controls tallying just 14 as the Tigers notched 20. Georgetown also held a 33-28 advantage on shots.
The Hoyas will have the week off before hosting Notre Dame on Saturday in GU's second BIG EAST matchup of the season. The opening draw is scheduled for 1 p.m.. and the game will be televised locally on Verizon FiOS. Live stats and a webcast will also be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
