Monroe Named All-BIG EAST First Team, Freeman Earns Second Team Honors

March 8, 2010

WASHINGTON - Georgetown University sophomore center Greg Monroe (New Orleans, La./Helen Cox) was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team and junior guard Austin Freeman (Mitchellville, Md./DeMatha) was selected as an All-BIG EAST Second Team selection in an announcement by league officials on Sunday.

Monroe finished second on the team in scoring with 16.0 points per game and led the team in rebounding with 9.6 boards per game. Last year's BIG EAST Rookie of the Year and the only underclassmen on this year's preseason All-BIG EAST Team, he was recognized by the conference four times this season, being named Player of the Week once and earning a spot on the Honor Roll three times. Monroe had 11 double-doubles this season, including one game in which he recorded at least 10 points and assists (against Providence, 12-12).

Freeman, meanwhile, led the team in scoring with 17.3 points per game, which ranked eighth in the BIG EAST. He scored 19.5 points per game against conference opponents, which ranked fourth in the league. The junior co-captain, who missed two games and was diagnosed with diabetes the week of the final regular season game, was eighth in the league in field goal percentage (54.2%), leads the BIG EAST in three-point field goal percentage (47.9%), is ninth in three-point field goals made (56) and is fifth in free throw percentage (84.3%).

Under Head Coach John Thompson III, the Hoyas have had 10 All-BIG EAST selections, including four first team selections and four second team honorees.

Monroe being named to the All-BIG EAST first team gives Georgetown 22 all-time selections to that squad. Freeman's second team recognition marks the 17th time a Georgetown player has been placed on that squad. Since the BIG EAST was formed in 1979-80, Georgetown players have earned 73 all-conference honors.
