WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's lacrosse squad (8-5, 6-0 BIG EAST) stayed perfect in the BIG EAST on Saturday despite a shaky start. The No. 14 Hoyas went down 4-0 to open the game, but came back to down the Rutgers University Scarlet Knights (9-4, 2-3 BIG EAST) 19-12 at Multi-Sport Field. Georgetown heads into a nonconference matchup with Yale next weekend on a five-game win streak.
Rutgers had the momentum early tallying four goals in the first four minutes as GU struggled to gain possession. However, the Blue & Gray regrouped to post a 3-0 run of its own including scores from Sarah Seats (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School), Kelsi Bozel (Hunt Valley, Md./Notre Dame Prep) and Jordy Kirr (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr School).
The squads traded goals over the next few minutes, and at 11:15 Jacqueline Giles (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) hit a free position to tie it at seven and bookend a four-goal run. In the last 30 seconds of the half, both teams managed to find the back of the cage as senior Ashby Kaestner (Trappe, Md./Saints Peter and Paul) posted a hat trick in the first to make it 11-8 at the break.
Rutgers once again opened the half with a score, but this time Georgetown had a stronger answer. The Hoyas went on a 7-0 run spanning 12 minutes to take a nine-goal lead. Kirr started things out and Giles added back-to-back scores. Bunny O'Reilly (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside School) found the back of the cage followed by two goals from Molly Ford (Reisterstown, Md./Notre Dame Prep). Freshman Sophia Thomas (Lutherville, Md./Maryvale Prep) rounded things out as Georgetown led 18-9.
The Scarlet Knights tried to mount a comeback scoring two goals to pull within seven, but a quick timeout allowed Georgetown to gain momentum back as Bozel hit her third of the afternoon. Rutgers score in the closing minutes, but the Blue & Gray still managed to come away with the 19-12 victory.
Giles led the Hoyas with four goals, while Ford added two goals and a team-high three assists. Bozel's hat trick was a career-first and Kaestner posted three goals. Additionally, 10 different players tallied points for GU. Georgetown outshot Rutgers 33-31 and had five more ground balls as well as four more saves.
The Hoyas will be back in action on Friday as the team travels to Yale for the final nonconference matchup of the season. The opening draw is scheduled for 7 p.m.
