Final Stats
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Georgetown University softball team (15-25, 6-8 BIG EAST) gave up two fifth inning runs to surrender a lead for the second time in the game, as they fell to Seton Hall (15-23, 5-9 BIG EAST) 3-2 in the third game of their BIG EAST Conference series on Sunday afternoon.
The loss marks the first time this season the Hoyas have been swept in a three-game conference series.
The Hoyas opened the game in strong fashion, as Samantha Peters led off with a home run, her fourth of the season, to give Georgetown a 1-0 lead after the first inning. Ashley Forsyth and Mackensey Carter hung zeroes on the scoreboard over the next three innings, until the Pirates were able to tie the score in the bottom of the fourth inning. Brittany Schillizzi singled to centerfield to drive in Nicole Loewenstein tying the score at one.
Georgetown answered in the top of the fifth inning, after Shikara Lowe (Beaverton, Ore./Jesuit) led off with a double and was pinch-run for by Callie Eward (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton). Eward moved to second when Cara Savarese (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset)drew a walk and then stole third base. Peters followed with a single to put the Hoyas in front 2-1, but the Pirates were able to get a double play and retire the side without any more damage.
Seton Hall jumped in front in the bottom of the fifth inning as Katie Kaelin doubled to right centerfield to drive in two runs, putting SHU in front 3-2, the last offense either team would manage.
Mackensey Carter (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) took the loss allowing three runs on seven hits. Jennifer Connell (Roswell, Ga./Roswell) tossed a scoreless inning of relief, allowing one hit.
Ashley Forsyth picked up the victory tossing 7.0 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits and seven strikeouts.
The Hoyas return to action on Tuesday when they take on George Washington at 4 p.m. They return to Guy Mason Field on Wednesday evening when they host James Madison University at 5 p.m.
