The Georgetown men's golf team is picking a good time to play some of their best golf of the year. The Hoyas shot a two-over par, 286 in the second round of the BIG EAST Championships to take a five stroke lead over the rest of the field, as they look to close out the 2009-2010 season with the team's best finish of the year.
A day after rainy conditions cut the Hoyas' first round short and forced two players to finish their final three holes this morning before teeing off in the second round, the team responded with an emphatic performance that has them sitting in first place at 12-over par, 580. St. John's is in second at 17-over par, 585 and Seton Hall and Louisville are tied for third with scores of 19-over par 587.
Georgetown's tournament-low score of 286 in the second round was spearheaded by the play of Vincenzo Salina (Vandoeuvres, Switzerland/Institut Florimont), who fired a two-under par, 69 on the par-71, 7,125 yard Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort & Golf Club. Coupled with a stellar one-over par, 72 from the first round of competition, Salina currently sits in second place with a combined score of one-under par, 141. The senior's score after two rounds tied the Georgetown record low for 36 holes at the BIG EAST Championships (Andreas Huber, 1998) and places him in a tie for the ninth lowest score all-time.
Salina is closely trailed by three other Hoya golfers in the top-21 of the 60 player field. Junior Brandon Ellis (Westerville, Ohio/St. Francis de Sales) shot an even par, 71 in round two and is tied for sixth place with a 36-hole score of three-over par, 145. Sophomore Brian Dorfman (Greenwood Village, Colo./Cherry Creek) ended his first two rounds in a tie for 16th at five-over par 147 after shooting three-over par 74 in round two. Junior Daniel Hathway (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Prep) carded a one-over par, 72 in the second round to place himself in a tie for 21st at six-over, 148. Sophomore Taylor Hall (Roswell, Ga./Blessed Trinity) rounds out Georgetown's competitors in the field at 10-over par, 152 to tie for 41st. Hall shot a six-over par, 77 in the second round.
A win at the BIG EAST Championships would easily mark the Hoyas' best performance of the year and bring them their first team title on the season. Georgetown's sixth place finish at the John Dallio Memorial in September is the Blue & Gray's best result to date.
Georgetown has not won the team title at the BIG EAST Championships since 1998, when the tournament was played at the TPC at Avenel in Potomac, Md.
Salina trails DePaul's Michael Furci by one stroke heading into tomorrow's final 18. If he is able to overtake the Blue Demon for the individual title, he would be Georgetown's second-ever individual champion since the BIG EAST Men's Golf Championship began in 1979. Andreas Huber took home the individual title in 1998.
The 54-hole tournament concludes tomorrow morning with the first threesome teeing off for the final 18 holes at 8 a.m.
