BETHESDA, Md. - A grand slam from Georgetown's Andy Lentz (Farmington Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) in the bottom of the sixth sealed the 13-1 victory over the Norfolk State University Spartans (8-12-1) Wednesday evening at Shirley Povich Field. The Blue & Gray trailed early, but came roaring back to get the win and improve to 16-12 on the season.
A double to the centerfield wall scored one in the first for the Spartans, but Georgetown answered in the bottom of the inning as Dan Capeless (Centreville, Mass./Boston College High School) drove in a run on a hit to right field.
In the second, the Hoyas began to work on the bases starting with Tommy Lee (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac/Winthrop). The senior stole second before advancing to third on a wild pitch, he then scored on a daring play stealing home to put the Hoyas ahead. Rand Ravnass (Fort Worth, Texas/All Saints Episcopal) followed suit stealing a pair of bases before scoring on a NSU error making the score 3-1.
The Spartans walked in a run in the third and Georgetown managed two more in the bottom of the fourth. Dan Godefroi's (Andover, Mass./Andover) single allowed Capeless to cross the plate and Lentz hit a sac fly to right to make it 6-1.
Lentz's bat continued to be hot in the sixth. The sophomore hit a bomb on a full count and bases loaded over the left-field fence for the grand slam to give the Hoyas a nine-run lead. Ravnass added a solo shot just two batters later as Georgetown went ahead 11-1.
Justin Leeson's (Exton, Pa./West Chester) single to left in the seventh and another walked-in run in the eight made the final 13-1 as the Hoyas got revenge on a 7-4 loss to the Spartans earlier in the season.
Lentz led the way for the Hoyas going 1-for-3 at the plate with one run and five RBI. Ravnass added a 1-of-2 performance with three runs scored and a pair of RBI. Bobby Kirby (Bel Air, Md./Loyola Blakefield) got the win on the mound with four strikeouts in five innings and allowing just one run. Georgetown had 13 hits and no errors in the game.
Georgetown will play a BIG EAST series at South Florida this weekend. The first game in Tampa, Fla., is scheduled for Friday at 7 p.m.
