Game Notes
NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. - The top-seeded Georgetown University women's lacrosse squad will open BIG EAST Tournament play on Thursday evening with a semifinal game against the Loyola (Md.) University Greyhounds. The Hoyas are currently 11-5 on the season and finished conference play with a perfect 8-0 record.
Last night, Georgetown had seven people honored at the league's annual banquet. Head Coach Ricky Fried earned his second-consecutive BIG EAST Coach of the Year award, an honor voted on by the other coaches in the conference. Additionally attacker Molly Ford, midfielder Ashby Kaestner as well as defenders Logan McCraw (Malvern, Pa./Conestoga) and Kelly Barnes (St. David's, Pa./Radnor) were all named to the first team. Attacker Jordy Kirr (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr School) and goalkeeper Caitlin Formby (Towson, Md./Notre Dame Prep) were both named to the second team.
Ford has scored a team-high 41 goals and also had 25 assists for 66 points on the season. She had seven points on three different occasions this season including a six goal, one assist performance at Villanova. Kaestner is second on the team in scoring with 43 points on 33 goals and 10 assists. She also leads the squad in draw controls with 46 and ranks third in caused turnovers with 19. She scored five goals three times this season and scored the game winner in overtime against Loyola.
Georgetown is 3-0 in BIG EAST semifinal games, but has never won the BIG EAST Tournament Championship. This is the first year the Hoyas are entering the tournament with an undefeated conference record. The Blue & Gray is also on an eight-game win streak.
Loyola (11-6) is 5-5 all-time against the Hoyas. In the regular season matchup last week, GU won 13-12 in double overtime in a wild finish that included time added to the clock and two possible game winners. This was revenge for a loss last year at Loyola. Georgetown has won five of the previous six games dating back to 2001.
The opening draw is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Rutgers University's Yurcak Field. The game will also be televised live on CBS College Sports. Jason Knapp will call the game and Sheehan Stanwick Burch will serve as the color analyst.
