WASHINGTON - A pair of Georgetown University baseball players earned player of the week honors from their respective summer leagues after their performances during the opening weeks of play.
Junior Rand Ravnaas (Fort Worth, Texas/All Saints' Episcopal) shared Player of the Week honors in the Cal Ripken League for the extended first week of June 4-13.
Ravnaas, playing for the Alexandria (Va.) Aces, began the season on a five-game hitting streak, going 11-for-22 over that stretch. He finished the week batting .375 (12-for-32) with three doubles, a league-leading two triples and two home runs, five runs batted in and seven runs scored. The lefty-swinging outfielder posted four-straight multi-hit games from June 5-10, including a four-hit effort on June 9 against the Herndon Braves.
Through 14 games, Ravnaas is batting .327 with four doubles, three triples, two home runs and a team-best 12 RBI.
Sophomore Charlie Steinman (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Chaminade), playing for the Winchester (Va.) Royals, was named the Valley League's Pitcher of the Week on June 14. Steinman had started his first two games and carried a 0.68 earned run average, throwing 13 innings, while striking out eight batters with two walks and just two earned runs.
Through four starts, Steinman is 4-0 with a 1.29 ERA. He has thrown 28.0 innings and given up four earned runs on 27 hits with five walks and 21 strikeouts.
Senior first baseman Dan Capeless (Centreville, Mass./Boston College H.S.) has appeared in four games for the Falmouth Commodores in the Cape Cod League and is batting .364 with one double and one RBI.
