Capeless Takes Part in Summer League Practice at Fenway Park

June 29, 2010

WASHINGTON - Senior first baseman Dan Capeless (Centreville, Mass./Boston College H.S.) is living one of his childhood dreams this summer, as he is playing in the famed Cape Cod Summer League, perhaps the best summer wood-bat baseball league for college players in the country.

Growing up near the Cape, Capeless' family used to serve as a host family for players in the league and he himself attended games when he was younger.

On Monday, Capeless lived another of his childhood dreams, as he stepped into the batter's box at Fenway Park as part of a special practice coordinated by the Cape Cod League and the Boston Red Sox.

Capeless is playing for the Falmouth (Mass.) Commodores in the famed Cape League on a temp contract and will be sharing his experiences with fans during the summer. He has appeared in eight games for the Falmouth and is batting .211 with one double and one RBI.

"Today (Monday), I had the opportunity to workout at Fenway Park in Boston, Mass. Growing up in Mass and being a life-long Red Sox fan, it was something I always wanted to be able to do, but never really thought could happen so that was cool.

"Each Cape League team brought up their position players to work out in front of Major League scouts. Our workout time slot was paired up with the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox time slot, so there were about 25 of us on the field during the workout. During the practice, we worked out on the bases, took infield and hit batting practice in front of representatives from all major league teams.

"Everyone was excited this morning despite the fact we had to meet the bus at 5:45 a.m. to depart. I mean, who could not be excited to play at the most historic ballpark in the country and home of America's team the Boston Red Sox.

"As hot as it was and as nervous as I was, I feel like I did really well being in such a daunting setting as Fenway Park. Even though the place was pretty much empty, it was really something else. Just to know what has happened on that field and to be able to just walk around on it was cool.

"I hit a couple balls out of the yard in batting practice and I really did not expect to conquer the deep right center field fence but I guess the excitement of being there gave me some extra pop with a wood bat.

"I grabbed some dirt and grass, obviously, as any fan would, and we finished up our workout and headed back on what was one of the greatest baseball experiences I have ever had individually."
