WASHINGTON - Former Georgetown University women's basketball star Rebekkah Brunson was among four players added to the 2009-12 USA Basketball Women's National Team pool. The 2010 USA World Championship and the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team will be selected from the 24-player pool.
Brunson's national team experience includes a stint with the 2007 USA FIBA Americas Championship Team, which won gold in Chile to qualify for the 2008 Olympics. As a member of the 2007-08 USA Basketball Women's National Team she also played in a handful of exhibition games.
With the WNBA's Minnesota Lynx, Brunson averaged 11.3 ppg and led the squad in rebounding with 10.3 rpg as well as 4.0 offensive rebounds per game. Minnesota finished 13-21 on the season with Brunson started all 30 games of the season.
At Georgetown, Brunson was the program's first All-America honoree earning honorable mention in 2004. As a senior she was the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year and is a four-time All-BIG EAST selection. Brunson holds the record for blocks in a game (8) and rebounds in a game with 22. She is the program's second-leading scorer with 1,792 career points and leading rebounder with 1,093 boards.
While at Georgetown, Brunson was on the 2003 USA Pan American Games Team that went 5-2 and won the silver medal. The team of collegians competed against national teams that were preparing for that summer's FIBA Americas Championship.
Members of the USA National Team will assemble on Sept. 4 in Washington, D.C., to tip-off its final training prior to departing for Europe to compete in the 2010 FIBA World Championship. The team will take on defending world champion Australia in an exhibition game on Sept. 10 in Hartford, Conn., and will cap its domestic training with a friendly against Spain, the No. 5-ranked women's program in the world on Sept. 12.
The 12-member 2010 USA World Championship Team will be selected from the 24-member USA National Team pool. The make-up of the USA National Team during its exhibition contests will be partly dependent upon who is competing in the WNBA playoffs and the official 12-woman USA roster that will compete in the 2010 FIBA World Championship must be submitted to FIBA at the technical meeting that normally is held the day prior to the start of the competition.
