Final Stats
WASHINGTON - WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University field hockey team defeated Lehigh University by a score of 5-1 on Saturday afternoon at the William I. Jacobs Recreational Complex at American University. Charlotte Tierney (Rye, N.Y./Holy Child) had two goals to lead the Hoyas in scoring as they took a 4-0 halftime lead.
Georgetown improves to 4-1 with the victory and is off to one of its best starts in 10 years. The Hoyas also received goals from sophomore Kimberly Keating (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy), sophomore Catherine Shugrue (Devon, Pa./Episcopal Academy) and sophomore Laura Thistle (Glenside, Pa./Mount Saint Joseph Academy).
Shugrue scored the first goal just over four minutes into the game off a pass from sophomore Annie Wilson (Darien, Conn./Darien). Wilson dribbled across the baseline and fed Shugrue in front of the cage to put Georgetown on top 1-0.
Tierney added the first of her two goals minutes later. Tierney's first goal was assisted by Wilson from the left of the cage weaving her way through the circle. Tierney then added her second in the 22nd minute as she shot through traffic in front of the cage assisted by Shugrue.
Keating added the final tally of the first half as she connected from 15 yards out on the right side with an assist by Laura Thistle.
Thistle opened the second half with an unassisted goal, closing out the scoring for the Hoyas. She picked up a loose ball in front of the cage off a deflection to seal the victory.
Melissa Kuhns scored an unassisted goal to put Lehigh on the board late in the second half.
Sophomore Briana Pereira (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) allowed one goal and had four saves for her fourth victory of the season.
Georgetown will hit the road as the Hoyas take on their first BIG EAST opponent in Louisville on Friday, September 17 at 3 p.m. at Trager Stadium in Louisville, Kentucky. While in Kentucky, the Hoyas will also take on Radford on Saturday, September 18 at 2 p.m.
