Sept. 21, 2010

Final Stats

WASHINGTON -

The Georgetown University field hockey team (5-3) scored three second-half goals this afternoon to defeat Robert Morris (2-6), 3-2 at the William I. Jacob Recreational Complex. Sophomore forward Catherine Shugrue (Devon, Pa./Episcopal Academy) scored two goals off of penalty corners in the victory.

Sophomore forward Charlotte Tierney (Rye, N.Y./Holy Child) scored her seventh goal of the season, the eventual game winner, and Shugrue added her sixth and seventh goals of the season. Shugrue and Tierney are tied for the team lead in goals. Sophomore goalkeeper Briana Pereira (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) added three saves in her fifth victory of the season.

Robert Morris opened the game with a goal at 12:34 when Chantele Crow scored on a breakaway. The Hoyas trailed at the half, 1-0. Shugrue opened the second half with the first of her two goals on the day. She hit the first one at 39:18, one of two penalty corners that would hit the back of the cage. The goal was assisted by Sophia Pifer (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) and Annika Bannon (Hopkinton, Mass./Notre Dame Academy).

Shugrue added her second goal of the afternoon and her seventh of the season at 52:01 off the penalty corner. It was the second penalty corner to be converted for the Hoyas. The goal was also assisted by the combination of Pifer and Bannon.

A little over a minute and a half later, Tierney added her seventh goal of the season when she hit from the center of the circle on the pass from Annie Wilson (Darien, Conn/Darien) to give the Hoyas 3-1 lead.

Ally McGuire made it a 3-2 game when she connected with the assist by Kylie McKain, but it was too late as the Hoyas would hold on for the victory.

Georgetown will hit the road as it will travel to North Carolina to take on Appalachian State on Saturday, Sept. 25 at noon. The Hoyas will conclude the weekend facing Davidson on Sunday, Sept. 26 at noon.
