WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's lacrosse freshman class was ranked fifth in the nation by Inside Lacrosse magazine and first among all BIG EAST schools. Georgetown also had three players named in the Top 25 Rising Freshmen article and two on the 2011 Watch List.
The Blue & Gray was given the ranking for a number of reasons including bringing in two First Team All-Long Island defenders and three Under Armour All-Americans that will bolster the midfield and attack for the Hoyas.
Georgetown faced six of the top ten teams last year including the University of Maryland, Duke University, the University of Florida and the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, who made up the top five, as well as Northwestern University and Loyola University (Md.) in conference play.
Georgetown had three players among the top 25 rising freshman.
Caroline Seats (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park) was ranked No. 8 for her ability to play on both ends of the field. The Under Armour All-American is no stranger to Georgetown as her older sister Sarah graduated in 2010. At Roland Park, she tallied 47 goals, 31 assists and 85 groundballs as a senior leading the squad to a 16-5 mark. She was the MVP of the Under Armour All-America Underclass Tournament and a member of the All-Tewaarton Team as well as an All-Met selection, an IAAM All-Star and captain of her team. Seats ran track, played basketball and field hockey, where she was a two-time all-state honoree. She won the C. Markland Kelly, Jr. Distinguished Athletic Service Award for Roland Park Country School in 2011.
Caroline Tarzian (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) was selected No. 16 for her scoring ability. Tarzian led her high school team to a 16-0 mark as a senior and was named the 2010 Nassau County Player of the Year by Newsday as well as an Under Armour All-American. She helped her team win the state title all four years at Garden City. Tarzian also played field hockey earning all-state honors.
Lauren Schwalje (Setauket, N.Y./St. Anthony's) was No. 19 as the attacker has proven speed and can score in transition. Schwalje tallied 24 goals and 18 assists as a senior at St. Anthony's where she led the team to a 17-2 record. She was named the 2010 Attacker of the Year in her conference and was a three-time all-league selection. Additionally, she was named an Under Armour All-American. Schwalje helped her team win four-consecutive league titles and was the 2008 Rookie of the Year.
Two Hoyas also received recognition on 2011 Watch List. Molly Caputo (Manulis, N.Y./Fayetteville-Maulis) and Megan Marinelli (Northport, N.Y./Northport) were both selected among some of the best freshmen in the nation.
The Hoyas are in the midst of their fall season. Georgetown will have the weekend off before participating in the Play for Parkinson's on October 16.
