Box Score

LAS VEGAS - The No. 21/21 Georgetown University women's basketball team won the Lady Rebel Round-Up with a 64-45 victory over the University of Nevada Las Vegas Lady Rebels (6-1) Sunday afternoon at Cox Pavilion. Junior guard Sugar Rodgers (Suffolk, Va./King's Fork) was named the tournament MVP after leading the Hoyas in scoring in both of the wins over No. 10/10 Georgia and UNLV.

"I thought we played very well defensively tonight," said Georgetown Head Coach Terri Williams-Flournoy. "We forced them into 25 turnovers and held them to 45 points. This is what we need to do defensively to win games."

Georgetown is now 5-2 on the season and has won four in a row. The win also marked the second-consecutive undefeated opponent that the Hoyas have knocked off.

The game was physical from the start as both teams saw some hard fouls early. UNLV managed quick scores to lead by three, but the Hoya defense began to wear on the Lady Rebels as Georgetown staged a 6-0 run which was fueled by second-chance points and defensive steals resulting in Hoya layups and a 15-10 advantage.

The Lady Rebels answered with a pair of free throws, but a trey by senior guard Alexa Roche (Bellmore, N.Y./St. Michael's Academy) and two from senior point guard Rubylee Wright (Latta, S.C./Latta) made it 24-15.

Late three's from both sides gave the Blue & Gray a 30-22 advantage at the break.

A pair of three's allowed the Lady Rebels to pull within five early in the second half. The Hoyas battled back as Rodgers caught fire scoring eight consecutive points to give GU a 47-35 advantage and its largest lead of the game to that point.

Roche sank a three from the right side and added a layup to move ahead by 17 and the Hoya defense forced a six-minute scoring drought for the Lady Rebels.

From that point on, the Hoyas waited out the clock and maintained the lead as a number of players saw action. At the final buzzer the Hoyas had the 64-45 win and the tournament title.

Rodgers led the Hoyas with 16 points, senior forward Tia Magee (Tulsa, Okla./Jenks) added 12 points. Roche had 10 points and a squad-best seven boards.

The Hoyas shot 35.4 percent from the field and forced 25 Lady Rebel turnovers on nine steals, but were outrebounded, 42-37.

:Once again this was a full team effort and we had everyone contributing to today's win and the tournament championship," said Williams-Flournoy.

The Hoyas will have just one day off upon returning to campus as the squad travels to Baltimore, Md., to take on the Coppin State University Eagles on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m.
