WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University softball team opened up the Carolina Classic by losing a pair of games on Saturday afternoon, falling to Saint Joseph's, 2-0, and North Carolina, 14-0. The Hoyas fall to 1-6 on the season and have lost their last four games.
Junior Mackensey Carter (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) pitched six innings without giving up an earned run in the tournament opener, but the Hawks pushed across the two winning runs in the first inning after an error. The Hoyas out-hit Saint Joseph's, six to five, with freshman Alexandria Anttila (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community), sophomore Shikara Lowe (Beaverton, Ore./Jesuit), freshman Jenna Stark (Huntington Beach, Calif./Orange Lutheran), sophomore Jordan Hansen (Omaha, Neb./Millard West), junior Regan Page (Atlanta, Ga./Greater Atlanta Christian) and junior Cara Savarese (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) all registering one hit. However, the Hawks' Erin Gallagher didn't allow any runner to cross home plate and Georgetown lost its second game decided by two runs or less.
The second contest, against the host Tar Heels, lasted only five innings, as North Carolina used an eight-run first inning to put the game out of reach immediately. Stark was the only Hoya to get a hit off of three UNC pitchers who combined for the shutout. Freshman Blair Sirockman (Flemington, N.J./The Hun School of Princeton) pitched the final four innings for Georgetown, striking out three. It was the third time Georgetown has been shutout this season.
The team returns to action tomorrow afternoon when they play Penn State at 1 p.m.
