WASHINGTON - Senior first baseman Dan Capeless (Centreville, Mass./Boston College HS) and junior right fielder Rand Ravnaas (Fort Worth, Texas/All Saints' Episcopal) each hit home runs and Georgetown scored eight runs in the first three innings as the Hoyas went on to beat Rollins, 12-2, in the Rollins College Baseball Week at Alfond Stadium Wednesday night.
It was the third win in five games for Georgetown at the Rollins event, as the team improves to 8-5 overall, while the Tars fall to 13-6 overall.
The 12-run offensive output backed a solid pitching performance from freshman Alex Baker (Charlotte, N.C./Ardrey Kell), who went 5.0 innings and gave up two runs on seven hits with one walk and three strikeouts.
The Hoyas scored all the runs they'd need in the first inning, jumping out to a 3-0 lead with a two-run home run from Capeless highlighting the inning. GU added five more runs in the third and a three-run home run from Ravnaas was the big hit in a four-run sixth inning.
Sophomore center fielder Justin Leeson (Exton, Pa./West Chester) hit a leadoff single and stole second in the first before moving to third on a single from sophomore shortstop Mike Garza (San Antonio, Texas/Douglas MacArthur). After Garza was picked off, Ravnaas walked and Leeson scored on a double steal. Ravnaas, who moved to third on the steal, scored when Capeless hit a two-run shot to right.
Leeson again set the table in the third, this time hitting a leadoff double. After a walk to Garza, Ravnaas followed with a single to right to score Leeson, giving GU a 4-1 lead. Garza scored on an error and a walk to Capeless and a single from senior catcher Erick Fernandez (Hialeah, Fla./Hialeah) loaded the bases. Ravnaas scored on a wild pitch and freshman Steve Anderson (Albany, N.Y./Guilderland) capped off the inning with a two-run double to center, making it 8-1.
Baker gave up a run in the fourth and worked his way out of trouble in the fifth, thanks in part to Fernandez throwing out a stolen base attempt, before handing the ball to the bullpen. Four pitchers - senior Pablo Vinent (Miami, Fla./Belen Jesuit), senior Mike Seander (Cranston, R.I./St. Raphael Academy), junior Billy Cosmopulos (Seekonk, Mass./Moses Brown) and sophomore Neal Dennison (Houston, Texas/Lamar) - combined to throw four shutout innings, allowing only two hits with three strikeouts to close out the win.
In the sixth, sophomore Corbin Blakey (Alpharetta, Ga./Centennial) and Leeson hit singles to start the inning and Garza reached on an error, allowing a run to score, making it 9-2. Ravnaas followed with his team-leading fifth home run of the season, a three-run shot to left-center to close out the scoring.
The Hoyas scored 12 runs on 13 hits, with Leeson going 3-for-5 with a double, two singles, three runs scored and a stolen base, while Capeless went 3-for-4 with a home run, triple and a single, two runs and two RBI. Ravnaas drove in four runs, went 2-for-2, with a home run, single, two walks, two runs scored and two stolen bases.
After a day off tomorrow, the Hoyas return to action Friday, March 11. Georgetown plays Penn at 11 a.m. and then plays Maine at 2:30 p.m.
