WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University softball team returned to action after a week off on Wednesday afternoon, dropping both games of a doubleheader to the Princeton Tigers in the Hoyas' home opener at Guy Mason Field. GU lost game one, 11-6, and was defeated in the second game, 9-1, in six innings.
With the results, the Blue & Gray fall to 3-17 on the year, while Princeton improves to 3-7.
Georgetown lost the first game of the afternoon despite a late-inning rally that yielded all of the team's six runs, including Mackensey Carter's (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) second home run of the year. After sophomore Kelly Cianciotta (Summit, N.J./Scotch Plains Fanwood) was hit by a pitch to lead off the fifth inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Elyse Graziano (Floral Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy), Carter launched the Alex Peyton offering over the left field wall to put the Hoyas on the board and make the score 8-2.
A third run was added on a single by freshman Jenna Stark (Huntington Beach, Calif./Orange Lutheran) when she drove home Alexandria Anttila (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community), who followed Carter's home run with a double of her own.
Georgetown added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth on a bases loaded two-RBI single by Anttila and another run-producing single by senior Jillian Webb (Hemet, Calif./Hemet). Despite putting up back-to-back crooked numbers, the Hoyas were unable to stymie the Tigers' offense. Princeton scored three runs in each of the first, third and sixth innings and added another two in the fifth to nullify GU's comeback bid.
The nightcap was much more of a defensive affair, highlighted by a scoreless first three innings. Princeton finally got to Carter, Georgetown's starter in the circle, in the fourth inning, pushing one across to lead 1-0. The Tigers would put the game out of reach in the top of the sixth, scoring eight runs on six hits. The Hoyas would score their run in the bottom of the inning on another RBI hit from Stark to make the final score 9-1.
The Hoyas next games are on Friday, when they play a doubleheader to open the Radford Invitational in Troutville, Va. Georgetown plays Delaware at 3 p.m. and Ball State at 5 p.m.
