Georgetown Drops 4-1 Home Contest to Utah

March 23, 2011

Box Score

WASHINGTON - In cold and blustery conditions, the Georgetown University softball team lost to the visiting Utah Utes, 4-1, at Guy Mason Field on Wednesday night. Mackensey Carter (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) pitched her seventh complete game of the season as the Hoyas fell to 6-22 on the year.

GU notched five hits, while only giving up six, but were unable to capitalize on those whom they put on the basepaths - the Blue & Gray stranded 10 runners in the game. Freshman Jenna Stark (Huntington Beach, Calif./Orange Lutheran) went 2-for-4 for her fourth multi-hit game of the year and Kristi Preuss (LaPlata, Md./LaPlata) drove in the team's only run in the sixth inning, as the Hoyas completed their three-game homestand with a 1-2 record.

Utah scored in the top of the first inning following a leadoff triple by Tara Glover. She scored on a sacrifice fly by the very next batter, Chalese Fankhauser, to put the Utes up 1-0.

Carter held Utah scoreless for the next couple of innings, but Georgetown was unable to tie the game or take a lead. Stark singled to left field to lead off the second, but was thrown out attempting to extend her hit to a double. Following that, the Hoyas left two runners on base in each of the third through sixth innings.

The team had its best chance to put up a crooked number in the sixth inning, when, with one out, Rachel Nersesian (San Leandro, Calif./Bishop O'Dowd) reached on a throwing error by the pitcher and Cara Savarese (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) followed with a single through the left side. Both runners advanced one base when the left fielder misplayed the ball to put runners at second and third with one out.

Preuss drove in Nersesian with a groundout to third base, moving Savarese to third. Callie Eward (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) walked to put runners at the corners with two outs, but that would be the closest the Hoyas would get to scoring again, as Naomi Amu shut the door to preserve the 4-1 lead and the victory.

The Hoyas will play one road game against Virginia tomorrow afternoon in Charlottesville, before returning home to open their BIG EAST schedule this weekend. First pitch against the Cavaliers is scheduled for 4 p.m.
