WASHINGTON - Mackensey Carter (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) threw her fourth complete game of the season and Cara Savarese (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) had her sixth multi-hit performance of the year to lead the Georgetown University softball team to a 2-1 victory over UNC Wilmington and claim third place in the Lowcountry Invitational hosted by Charleston Southern University on Saturday afternoon. The Hoyas dropped a 3-1 decision to USC Upstate in the tournament's morning tilt at Buccaneer Field in Charleston, S.C. With the split, Georgetown improves its record to 3-11.
The Hoyas took a quick lead in the top of the first when freshman Alexandria Anttila (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community) was hit by a pitch and immediately stole second base. Sophomore Shikara Lowe (Beaverton, Ore./Jesuit) moved her to third with a single down the left field line and Anttila crossed the plate on a single by Savarese to put Georgetown up, 1-0.
Savarese was 2-for-4 on the day and now has 12 hits in her last 18 at bats. The junior first baseman has hit safely in the team's last six games, notching multiple hits in five of those games, and has raised her average nearly 200 points over that span, to .444, which ranks in the BIG EAST's top 10.
The Seahawks scored a run in the second inning to tie the game, but that would be all they could muster against another stellar outing from Carter. The junior scattered eight hits over seven innings to improve to 3-5 on the year and lower her ERA to 2.71.
Georgetown scored the winning run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly off the bat of junior Regan Page (Atlanta, Ga./Greater Atlanta Christian). UNC Wilmington loaded the bases in the bottom half of the inning, but was unable to score.
In the first game of the day, senior Melissa Conners (Wellington, Fla./Wellington) threw a complete game and Page was 2-for-3 with an RBI, but the Blue & Gray fell to USC Upstate 3-1.
Georgetown returns to action on Tuesday when they take on College of Charleston at 4 p.m.
