WASHINGTON - Junior Mackensey Carter (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) was 4-for-7 on the day, but the Georgetown University softball team could not capitalize on her performance, dropping both games of a doubleheader against Coastal Carolina on Wednesday evening. The Hoyas fell to the Chanticleers in game one, 4-1, and lost the nightcap, 5-1.
With the losses, GU will head into its home opener next Wednesday with a 3-15 record. Coastal Carolina is now 14-6 on the year.
In game one, Melissa Conners (Wellington, Fla./Wellington) continued her string of strong performances in the circle, giving up on two earned runs in six innings while striking out four, but Coastal Carolina scored its four runs in each of the first three innings to secure the win. The senior has a 2.21 ERA in her last three starts.
Georgetown tied the game, 1-1, in the second inning following a leadoff double by Cara Savarese (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset), a member of last week's BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. The junior then stole third base and scored when the third baseman couldn't field a shot off the bat of freshman Taylor Koenig (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) cleanly.
Coastal Carolina took the lead for good in its half of the frame, scoring twice in the bottom of the second and once in the third to make the final 4-1. Georgetown's best chance to tie the game came in the fifth inning after singles by Koenig and Carter put runners on first and second, but the Hoyas were ultimately unable to score.
In the second game, Coastal Carolina first baseman Stacy Snellings hit a three-run home run in the first inning and the Chanticleers would never trail en route to a 5-1 victory. The Blue & Gray out-hit their opponent, six to four, but was unable to convert the majority of those base knocks into runs, scoring its only run on an RBI single in the fifth inning off the bat of freshman Alexandria Anttila (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community).
The Hoyas now have a week off before they open up their home schedule on March 16 with a doubleheader against the Princeton Tigers. Game one at Guy Mason Field is set for 3 p.m.
