WASHINGTON - The No. 9 Georgetown University women's lacrosse squad fell, 17-10, to the University of Florida Gators (5-1) Wednesday evening. The game was delayed midway through the second half due to rain as the Hoyas trailed with 17:35 remaining. Georgetown is now 0-2 on the season after playing a pair of ranked squads.
Goals from seniors Jordy Kirr (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr School) and Kathleen Dwyer (Winnetka, Ill./Loyola Academy) pulled Georgetown within three early in the second half. Florida, however, managed three scores to make it 13-7 with 17:35 remaining. A storm passing through the region forced the squads off the field as the game was delayed an hour.
The Hoyas came out of the delay fired up as juniors Erin Lovett (Wantagh, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) and Kelly Barnes (St. Davids, Pa./Radnor) both scored to make it 13-9. Florida answered with three goals and the run proved to be the dagger as the Hoyas ran out of time for a comeback resulting in the 17-10 decision.
Senior Jacqueline Giles (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) put the Hoyas on the board to open the game, but the Gators' Kitty Cullen answered with three-consecutive scores. Goals from Kirr and sophomore Sophia Thomas (Lutherville, Md./Maryvale Prep) tied it at three, but once again Florida rattled off four more.
Georgetown's Hannah Franklin (Phoenix, Md./McDonogh School) and Kelsi Bozel (Hunt Valley, Md./Notre Dame Prep) each closed out the half with goals, however, the Gators managed three to lead 10-5 at the break.
The Hoyas were outshot, 32-19, but had 14 ground balls to Florida's 12. The Gators controlled the draw, 19-10, and the Hoyas committed 18 turnovers to Florida's 17.
Senior Lauren Thomas (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) took the loss in goal with four saves, while the Gators' Mikey Meagher was awarded the win with six saves to her credit.
The Blue & Gray will be back in action on Saturday as the squad hosts Duke University at Multi-Sport Field. The opening draw is set for 1 p.m.
