BETHESDA, Md. - Georgetown scored nine runs in the opening game and had 11 hits in the nightcap, but it wasn't enough as Pittsburgh hit eight home runs over two games and swept a BIG EAST doubleheader at Shirley Povich Field Friday night, winning the opening game, 15-9, and closing out the sweep with a 13-4 victory. The Hoyas fall to 18-19 overall and 1-10 in the BIG EAST, while Pittsburgh improves to 21-12 overall and 8-3 in the league.
The teams were originally scheduled to play three games over three days, but canceled Saturday's game due to inclement weather expected in the Washington Metropolitan area and played a doubleheader on Friday. The first game started at 4 p.m. with sunny skies and 60 degree temperatures, but the nightcap, which started at 7:33 p.m., was played with temperatures in the high 40s and winds picking up.
Pittsburgh wasted no time in the nightcap, hitting Georgetown junior starting pitcher Will Harris (Winter Park, Fla./Trinity Prep) for five runs in the first inning, with David Chester's two-run home run the big hit.
Senior third baseman Sean Lamont (Houston, Texas/Bellaire) hit an RBI single in the first to make it 5-1, but the Hoyas left two men on. Georgetown had the bases loaded with two out in the second, but could not cut into the deficit. In the third, senior catcher Erick Fernandez (Hialeah, Fla./Hialeah) was hit by a pitch, moved to third on a double from Lamont and scored when senior first baseman Dan Capeless (Centreville, Mass./Boston College HS) singled. With runners on the corners and the score 5-2, an apparent sacrifice fly from senior Dan Godefroi (Andover, Mass./Andover) was turned into a double play as the home plate umpire ruled Lamont left third early. After Capeless stole second, freshman designated hitter Steve Anderson (Albany, N.Y./Guilderland) singled to make it 5-3.
Sophomore reliever Thomas Polus (Crown Point, Ind./Andrean) came on in relief in the second inning and Pittsburgh added two more runs with the help of two errors and a two-run home run in the fourth from Rick Devereaux made it 9-3. Reliever Mike Seander (Cranston, R.I./St. Raphael Academy) gave up a two-run home run to Kevan Smith in the sixth and the Panthers added single runs in the final two innings.
Anderson went 3-for-4 with three singles and one RBI, sophomore center fielder Justin Leeson (Exton, Pa./West Chester) had a pair of hits for the Hoyas, while Lamont hit a double and a single and drove in one run.
In the first game, sophomore pitcher Charles Steinman (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Chaminade) gave up a leadoff off home run in the first to Zach Duggan and then walked the next three batters and two more runs came in to give Pitt a 3-0 lead. The Hoyas, however, came back with four runs in the bottom of the inning.
Leeson reached on a single and moved to third on a single from sophomore shortstop Mike Garza (San Antonio, Texas/Douglas MacArthur) before a double from Fernandez scored one run. Lamont was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Capeless reached on an error, scoring two runs and tying the game. Junior Kevin Johnson (Peabody, Mass./Belmont Hill) reached on an error to score a run and give the Hoyas a 4-3 lead. The Hoyas had the bases loaded with one out after a walk to sophomore left fielder Paul Bello (Towaca, N.J./Delbarton) but did not get any more runs across.
Pittsburgh tied the game at 4-all on a solo home run from Kevan Smith in the third and then took the lead for good with a six-run fourth inning, highlighted by a two-run single from Travis Whitmore and a solo home run from Rick Devereaux. The Hoyas got back on board with three runs in the seventh to make it 12-7. Garza walked and went to third on a single from Fernandez, with a throwing error bring him across. Lamont followed with a two-run home run to left, cutting the deficit to five run. The Panthers, however, score three times in the ninth to make it 15-7.
Steinman took the loss for the Hoyas, falling to 1-4 this season as he threw 3.0 innings, giving up four earned runs on two hits with four walks and two strikeouts. Freshman reliever Alex Baker (Charlotte, N.C./Ardrey Kell) threw two-thirds of an inning and gave up six runs (two of them earned) on five hits with one walk. Junior Billy Cosmopulos (Seekonk, Mass./Moses Brown) threw 2.1 innings and gave up two runs on four hits while junior Bobby Kirby (Bell Air, Md./Loyola Blake field) went 3.0 innings, giving up three runs on six hits.
Fernandez went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double, single, three runs scored and one RBI, while Lamont was 2-for-4 with a double, home run, two runs and two RBI.
