A Special Weekend Ahead for Georgetown Field Hockey

Oct. 5, 2012

WASHINGTON - Georgetown University's women's field hockey team (2-10, 0-2) plays host to Rutgers and Cornell over Columbus Day weekend. On Friday, October 5, at 7 p.m. the Hoyas will face Rutgers and have dedicated the game as a Stick-it-to-Cancer fundraising game. Then on Sunday, October 7, Georgetown will honor 10 seniors prior to its game with Cornell at 4 p.m. Both games will be played in College Park, Md. at University of Maryland's Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex.

Ten seniors lead the Hoyas into the weekend. Claire Mittermiller (La Jolla, Calif./La Jolla), Catherine Shugrue (Devon, Pa./Episcopal Academy), Charlotte Tierney (Rye, N.Y./Holy Child), Laura Thistle (Philadelphia, Pa./Mount Saint Joseph Academy), Caitlin Hickey (Milton, Mass./Milton Academy), Kimberly Keating (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy), Molly McShea (Strafford, Pa./Villa Maria Academy), Katy Wingo (Great Falls, Va./Langley), Annie Wilson (Darien, Conn./Darien) and Briana Pereira (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) all enter the weekend looking for their first conference win of the season.

The Rutgers game is GU's annual Stick-it-to-Cancer fundraising game. Over $11,000 in donations has already been received and Georgetown hopes to raise even more. The best way to make a donation is on-line by visiting:

All proceeds collected will benefit the National Foundation for Cancer Research. The NFCR has funded over 50 research laboratories worldwide and since its inception in 1973 has supported cancer research, public education relating to prevention, earlier diagnosis, better treatments and ultimately, a cure for cancer.

Last weekend GU hosted Monmouth and Lock Haven. The Hoyas opened a one goal lead against the Hawks when freshman Emily Weinberg (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Hathaway Brown) found the goal 10 minutes into the game. Monmouth then netted three unanswered for a 3-1 victory. The next day versus Lock Haven Georgetown fell behind by one score early but a second half goal by Wilson tied the affair. Lock Haven hit the game winner with 23 minutes remaining in the contest.

Georgetown also faced Rutgers and Cornell last season. Both games were on the road and Georgetown lost each contest. At Rutgers the Hoyas jumped to a 2-0 lead but lost a heartbreaker 3-2 when the Scarlet Knights scored the game winner with under a minute to play. Wilson and Mittermiller scored for GU while goalie Pereira had 16 saves. At Cornell the Hoyas went down two early and lost 4-2. The Hoyas had 18 shots in the game; GU's tallies came from Wilson and Shugrue.

Rutgers owns a 9-6 all time mark against Georgetown. The Scarlet Knights are 6-6 overall and 0-3 in the conference. RU has played three overtime games and defeated Bucknell 4-3 in extra time in its last outing.

Cornell is 4-6 this season. The Big Red won 3-2 at Colgate on Wednesday, October 3. It was the third straight victory for Cornell. It was their first road victory of the year, 1-5.
