Softball Gets Back in the Win Column on Saturday

March 10, 2012

Box Score

WASHINGTON - Georgetown University softball (9-14) fell in a close morning game to St. Francis (Pa.) (6-6) 1-0 and beat Howard (1-14) for the second time this season by a score of 8-1.

Despite the low score, both Georgetown and St. Francis (Pa.) got out to a quick hitting start in the morning contest. Megan Hyson (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) and Shikara Lowe (Beaverton, Ore./Jesuit) both hit singles to get on base, and Cara Savarese (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) was walked. Georgetown left the bases loaded at the bottom of the first.

Hyson singled again in the third inning, getting around to third off a SAC bunt from Elyse Graziano (Floral Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy), and a hit from Mackensey Carter (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) to force the fielder's choice that got Lowe out at second.

St. Francis scored the only run of the game in the fourth inning after loading the bases. The Blue & Gray couldn't find an answer and didn't tally a hit for the remainder of the contest. Georgetown had three hits in the game, with Hyson going two-for-three and Lowe going one-for-three.

Carter, Lauren O'Leary (La Canada, Calif./La Canda), and Hyson split pitching time, with Carter pitching four innings.

In the second game, Georgetown got on base early and never looked back. The Hoyas scored four of their eight runs in the first two innings, with Samantha Findling (Norcross, Ga./Norcross) picking up two RBI off a single to left field.

The second inning saw the return of Alexandria Anttila (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community) to the offense, as she hit a double to bring Taylor Koenig (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) home to score. Anttila then scored herself on a SAC fly from Graziano.

Georgetown kept up the consistent offensive performance against Howard with two runs apiece in the fourth and seventh innings. Six players had one hit for the Hoyas, to go with six players that had at least one RBI.

Hyson pitched the win in seven innings with six strikeouts.

The Hoyas wrap up the Florida Gulf Coast Tournament against Stony Brook tomorrow.
