WASHINGTON - The No. 15/14 Georgetown University women's lacrosse squad (2-2) will host the John Hopkins University Blue Jays (4-2) for a Wednesday night matchup under the lights at Multi-Sport Field. The Hoyas are looking to bounce back after a pair of losses against ranked opponents.
This past weekend, Georgetown dropped a 14-7 decision to No. 4/3 Duke in Durham, N.C. Georgetown tallied more shots (31-23) and more ground balls (15-13) while forcing 14 Blue Devil turnovers to GU's nine, but the telling stat was the Hoyas' 2-of-15 performance on free position shots. Junior midfielder Kelsi Bozel (Hunt Valley, Md./Notre Dame Prep) led the way with a pair of goals. Sophomore Barb Black (Ruxton, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) took the loss in goal with three saves.
Junior attacker Dina Jackson (Potomac, Md./Bullis), freshman attacker Caroline Tarzian (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) and Bozel are currently leading the team in scoring with 10, eight and eight points, respectively. Senior defender Kelly Barnes (St. David's, Pa./Radnor) and junior midfielder Sophia Thomas (Lutherville, Md./Maryvale Prep) have nine and eight caused turnovers on the year. Jackson and sophomore midfielder Kelyn Freedman (Newtown Square, Pa./Radnor) have seven draw controls each to their credit this season. Black has notched a squad-best 18 saves.
As of the last NCAA stat report, the Hoyas lead the nation in caused turnovers averaging 14.5.
In the win over No. 19 Towson last Wednesday, the team got six saves from freshman goalie KC Emerson and three goals from senior Colleen McCaffrey as the Blue Jays won a defensive battle. Hopkins improved to 4-2 on the season and snapped Towson's three-game season-opening win streak.
Senior attacker Candace Rossi is leading the team with 17 goals and nine assists for 26 points. She is followed by sophomore midfielderTaylor D'Amore who has 14 goals and 11 assists on the year for 25 points. McCaffrey rounds out the top three with 14 goals and three assists for the season. Emerson has played four games in the cage with 20 saves.
The Hoyas are 7-6 against the Blue Jays with the first meeting coming in 1977. At home, GU is 3-3 as the Blue & Gray won the last meeting at Multi-Sport Field by a score of 15-9 in 2010. Last season, Georgetown defeated JHU, 12-11, on the road as Jordy Kirr scored four goals in the win.
