Box Score

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 15/16 Georgetown University women's lacrosse team fell to the No. 5/5 University of Maryland Terrapins (17-3), 19-10, Wednesday evening at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. The Hoyas had a solid second half, but it wasn't enough to get the victory as the Blue & Gray dropped to 8-7 on the season.

"I thought Maryland came out and played hard, played fast and we reacted to them. You have to give a lot of credit to Maryland because they are an athletic team," said Georgetown Head Coach Ricky Fried. "In the second half, we played to our ability and we played fast, while we made some mistakes, we competed at a high level for 30 minutes, but 30 minutes isn't enough out of a 60-minute game."

Senior midfielder Erin Lovett (Wantagh, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) started it out winning the draw and coming down for the unassisted tally less than a minute in. The Terps scored on the ensuing possession which sparked a 7-0 run that lasted 14 minutes.

At 14:05, the Hoyas stopped the run with a goal by freshman attacker Caroline Tarzian (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) on the pass by sophomore midfielder Hannah Franklin (Phoenix, Md./McDonogh School).

Five Terp goals halted any GU momentum, but junior midfielder Sophia Thomas (Lutherville, Md./Maryvale Prep) hit a free position shot with 12 seconds remaining to make it 12-3 at the break.

Lovett opened the second half the same as the first with an unassisted tally at 26:43. Thomas added one a minute later as graduate student Kristen Coleman (Potomac, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) assisted on the goal to make it 12-5 and give the Hoyas a spark.

Sophomore midfielder Maggie Brown (Woodside, Calif./Menlo School) made it a 3-0 run hitting a free position at 21:37 as the Hoyas worked to get back in the game.

Maryland's score at 20:33 ended the Georgetown run, but the Blue & Gray answered three minutes later when junior midfielder Kelsi Bozel (Hunt Valley, Md./Notre Dame Prep) found sophomore midfielder Meghan Farrell (Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Visitation) cutting through the middle off of the free position shot to make it 13-7.

The Terps came back firing after a timeout with two quick scores, however, the Hoyas continued to attack.

Sophomore midfielder Kelyn Freedman (Newtown Square, Pa./Radnor) connected on a free position shot at 14:42 and fired one in a minute later to pull Georgetown within six, 15-9.

Thomas found the back of the cage off of the free position shot, but that was sandwiched in between a pair of Maryland goals as the Hoyas struggled to close the gap.

Late Terp goals made the final, 19-10, closing out GU's nonconference schedule.

Thomas led the way with three goals, while Freedman and Lovett both added two. Georgetown had more ground balls, 11-8, and forced 13 UMD turnovers but had just eight draw controls to Maryland's 23. Sophomore goalkeeper Barb Black (Ruxton, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) took the loss in the cage with four saves.

Georgetown was outscored in the first half, but tied the Terps with seven goals each in the second.

The Hoyas will close out the regular season on Saturday hosting the Rutgers University Scarlet Knights at 1 p.m., at Multi-Sport Field. The game will be televised live on CBS Sports Network and live stats as well as an audio-only broadcast will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
