WASHINGTON - Freshman Jack Murphy (Coronado, Calif./La Jolla Country Day) of the Georgetown men's tennis team was named the BIG EAST Male Tennis Player of the Week on Tuesday afternoon via a BIG EAST press release which can be found here.
This is the first BIG EAST award for the freshman from Coronado, Calif.
Murphy went 2-0 in his two matches on Friday in Richmond, Va. to help the Hoyas split their matches between Campbell and VCU at the VCU-hosted 4-1 Invitational.
The freshman won the only match for Georgetown against the No. 31 ranked VCU Rams. In the fourth slot for the Blue & Gray, Murphy defeated VCU's Jack Svensson in straight sets, 6-1; 6-1, although Georgetown went on to fall to the Rams, 4-1.
Later in the afternoon on Friday, Murphy beat Jean-Marc Krone, 6-1; 6-3, of the Campbell Fighting Camels en route to the Hoyas' first victory on the opening day of their 2014 spring schedule. Georgetown defeated Campbell, 4-1, with the other three wins coming from sophomore Daniel Khanin (Baldwin, N.Y./Pendleton), junior Shane Korber (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona Del Mar) and senior co-captain Casey Distaso (The Woodlands, Texas/Edmond North).
In the fall, Murphy went 9-4 in singles play for Georgetown. He earned victories 10 and 11 on Friday, which leads the men's tennis team.
The Georgetown men next play on Fri., Jan. 24 in a home event at the Yates Field House on Georgetown's campus against Boston College. Play is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
