WASHINGTON - The Georgetown field hockey team dropped a match against the No. 16 Temple Owls (12-5, 3-1 BIG EAST) on Friday afternoon at Multi-Sport Field to fall to 5-10 on the season and move to 0-4 in BIG EAST Conference play.
The Hoyas played most of the first half on their side of the field as Temple was able to maintain possession and test the Georgetown backline. The Owls inserted four penalty corners over a three-minute time span, during that period a combination of solid goalkeeping and defensive play prevented Temple from getting onto the board early.
Rachel Skonecki (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Red Land) was able to bat the ball away following the first corner while Sarah Butterfield (Bridgewater, N.J./Oak Knoll) blocked the shot following the second corner. The Temple Owls continued attacking and came close to scoring their first goal at 9:28 but Molly Thompson came through for the Hoyas and recorded her fifth defensive save of the season, preventing the ball from finding the back of the net.
Thompson would come through one more time at 18:15, recording her sixth defensive save of the season.
Temple forward Amber Youtz peppered Skonecki with shots until she finally broke through at 23:40 to score the game's first goal. The Owls would take four more shots over the course of the first half and ride the 1-0 lead into halftime.
The teams resumed play and the Hoyas kept pace with the Owls, preventing them from converting their corners into goals. Georgetown kept Temple in check for 20 minutes before Youtz weaved her way through the Blue & Gray defense to shoot the ball past Skonecki for the unassisted goal at 54:23.
GU would have little time to relax as Temple scored the third goal at 58:13 following the insertion of a penalty corner that went straight from the stick of Youtz to the back of the net. The lead increased to 3-0 and would remain that way for less than a minute as Katie Foran scored the final goal of the game at 59:03.
Aliyah Graves-Brown (Harrisburg, Pa./Harrisburg Academy) recorded her second shot of the game with time winding down at 65:27 but it went wide. The Blue & Gray were unable to capitalize on a 11 versus 10 advantage following a green card on Temple's Michelle Walsh and the clock struck zero to make the final 4-0.
"We have three games remaining on our schedule," said Head Coach Shannon Soares. "And for us it's about taking pride in each one of those games and working to our best so that we can represent Georgetown in the best way possible and that's what we're going to go out and focus on."
The Hoyas are back in action this Tuesday as they travel to Lynchburg, Va., to take on Liberty at 4 p.m. GU will then play the last two games of the season at home against Old Dominion and Towson on Friday, Oct. 31 and Sunday, Nov. 2, respectively. Both games are slated to start at 1 p.m.
