Box Score

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown field hockey team lost its opening BIG EAST contest against the No. 6 UConn Huskies in Storrs, Conn., 6-0, on Saturday afternoon to fall to 4-6 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

Rachel Skonecki (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Red Land) recorded 10 saves on the day, a new career and season high for the sophomore.

The Huskies scored two goals in the first half, while controlling possession and peppering the Hoyas with shots. The first UConn goal came at the 11:53 mark in the first half when Casey Umstead tipped in the ball following a pass from Anna Middendorf. Skonecki record five of her 10 saves following the first goal, the Huskies were able to find the back of the net once more at 32:34, however, to go up 2-0, a score that would remain going into halftime.

Connecticut threatened twice in the opening minutes of the second half, but Skonecki continued to rack up saves. Aliyah Graves-Brown (Harrisburg, Pa./ Harrisburg Academy) and Emily Weinberg had shots on goal for GU at 39:11 and 39:54, respectively, that UConn goalie Nina Klein saved. The two shots were the only scoring opportunities for the Blue & Gray on Saturday.

The Hoyas were able to hold the defending National Champions and their potent offense at bay for the first 16 minutes of the second half. The third goal of the game, by Chloe Hunnable at 51:37, proved to be too much for Georgetown, however, as UConn would go on to score three goals in ten minutes.

Roisin Upton scored the fourth goal to put the Huskies up 4-0 at 54:40; Umpstead would score the last two goals of the game, at 60:13 and 64:06 for a hat trick.

Connecticut received a total of three green cards over the course of the match, Chrissy Davidson and Tamara de Nobriga were served at 33:05 and 69:35, respectively while UConn as a team received a card at 67:30.

Georgetown returns home to the Hilltop for the first time in three weeks next weekend when it plays host to Providence on Saturday, Oct. 11 and Saint Joseph's on Sunday, Oct. 12, both games are slated for a noon start.
