Oct. 5, 2014 WASHINGTON - The Georgetown baseball played an exhibition game on Saturday afternoon, hosting the Ontario Blue Jays, an elite high school baseball team from Canada, at Shirley Povich Field. The Hoyas, playing a young lineup of mostly freshmen and sophomores, came away with an 18-8 victory.
Simon Mathews (West Haven, Conn./Hopkins School), a sophomore transfer from Temple, started on the mound for Georgetown and went three innings, striking out four while giving up just two hits and an unearned run. Freshman Kevin Superko ( Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley/Phillips Andover ) also went three innings, giving up just an unearned run. Freshman Jimmy Swad ( Washington, D.C./St. Albans School ) and sophomore Chris Giordano (Orlando, Fla./Lake Highland) also made appearances on the mound.
Offensively, the Hoyas pounded out 10 extra base hits, including two doubles each from freshman Alex Bernauer ( Sunnyvale, Calif./Fremont ) and sophomores Jake Kuzbel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Ridge) and Joe Sleiman ( Windermere, Fla./Lake Highland Prep ). Junior Curtiss Pomeroy ( Shrewsbury, Mass./Saint John's/Phillips Andover ) hit a monster, two-run home run over the left field wall. Sophomore Joseph Bialkowski ( Raleigh, N.C./Needham B. Broughton ) had a single, double and four RBI while Kuzbel and sophomore transfer Charlie Dillon ( Chicago, Ill./Berkshire School ) added three RBI each.
Defensively, the combination of Kuzbel and freshman Gordon Fisher (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich./Detroit Jesuit) turned a nice 5-4-3 double play and freshmen catcher Richie O'Reilly threw out a potential base stealer.
Georgetown finished the 2014 season with a 19-29 overall record and a 5-13 mark in BIG EAST play. The Hoyas finished strong, winning four of their final six conference games, and bring back 23 returners from last year, along with 11 newcomers.
